JOHKES Wakes Into a New Reality on “Karma in the Coma”

Some songs are written from experience. Others are written from survival. For Lincoln-based rapper JOHKES, “Karma in the Coma” is unmistakably the latter — a track built from the wreckage of a life-altering accident and the strange, unresolved questions it left behind.

From Leicester Roots to Lincoln Reflection

JOHKES is an independent UK rapper and songwriter with Leicester roots, now based in Lincoln. Music had always been central to his life, but in 2023 everything changed. A serious road traffic accident left him with tetraplegia, and put him through intensive care and a coma. When he woke, the life he came back to bore little resemblance to the one he’d left.

Rather than retreat from music, JOHKES turned toward it. Songwriting became the way he processed the aftermath — recovery, family, identity, guilt, forgiveness, and the darker and, at times, unexpectedly funnier realities of rebuilding a life from scratch. That process has now become a 14-track album, Peace I Can’t Wake To, set for release on 24 September 2026.

The Song at the Album’s Core

If the album has a beating, uneasy heart, it’s “Karma in the Coma.” The track digs into the harder question underneath the whole record: karma. JOHKES looks back at who he was before the crash, interrogating old choices, guilt, and consequences — and sitting with what it actually means to wake from a coma into a completely different future.

That’s the tension the whole album is built on: the strange peace JOHKES remembers from unconsciousness, set against the reality he woke back into. “Karma in the Coma” is where that conflict hits hardest, sharpened further by a guest vocal turn from Kara Rose, whose presence on the track adds another emotional layer to the push and pull between what was and what is.

Peace I Can’t Wake To isn’t a recovery narrative in the tidy, inspirational sense. It’s messier and more honest than that — a record about identity after trauma, about family and forgiveness, and about learning to live inside a body and a future you didn’t choose. “Karma in the Coma” is the clearest distillation of that struggle, and a strong introduction to an artist telling a story few others could.
